When you’re trying to lose weight or become more health conscious, it’s easy to think that drinking diet soda is a good idea. It’s calorie-free and doesn’t contain any sugar. Sounds like a win-win. Unfortunately, that’s not the whole story. These drinks are made with all kinds of chemicals that can be dangerous to your body and overall health. Today let’s look at 5 of the dangers of drinking diet soda.

They can harm your heart

A study conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that men who drank 2 or more servings of Diet Coke had a 23% higher risk of developing heart failure.

They can cause kidney problems

According to research conducted at Bringham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, women who drank 2 or more diet sodas a day had as much as a 30% decrease in kidney function.

They can increase your risk of diabetes

Adults who drank one diet soda a day had a 67% greater risk of type 2 diabetes compared with people who did not drink any diet soda. This was found in a study conducted at the University of Minnesota that looked at 10,000 adults.

They lead to increased waist circumference

Two studies conducted by the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center found astonishing results. They found:

  • Compared with non-users, diet soft drink consumers had a 70% increase in waist circumference than did non-users.
  • Frequent consumers – those who drink 2 or more diet drinks a day – had a 500% waistline increase over non-users.

Why does this happen when diet sodas are calorie free? Researchers believe:

  • Diet sweeteners trick the body and disrupt its natural ability to regulate calorie intake.
  • Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain.

They alter your mood

The American Academy of Neurology has discovered that artificially sweetened drinks are connected to a higher risk of depression – at least 30% as much.  Aspartame, or the sweetener in Diet Coke, is on an EPA list of potentially dangerous chemicals contributing to neurotoxicity, right beneath arsenic. How scary is that?

Next time you’re going for drink, make it a water. If you need to add a little extra flavor, try adding some fruit or veggies and turn it into a fancy water like you’d find at a spa.

Stay happy, healthy, and in motion AND REMEMBER…age is just a number!
